MILK VILLAIN GETS PIED

26 Nov

Check out this clip of Anita Bryant — the orange juice pitchwoman turned leading anti-gay spokesperson of the 1970s — taking a pie in the face during a press conference in Des Moines in 1977, after which she quipped, “At least it’s a fruit pie” before breaking down in tears. Bryant’s greatest nemesis, of course, was gay rights activist Harvey Milk, which explains why archive footage of Bryant features prominently in the new bio-pic Milk (Focus Features, 12/5, trailer). Bryant is now 68 and residing in Edmond, Oklahoma.

EXCLUSIVE: PHOTOS FROM NEW YORK “MILK” PARTY

20 Nov

EXCLUSIVE: PHOTOS FROM NEW YORK “MILK” PARTY

Sean Penn, the man of the hour, excuses himself from a conversation with talk show host Charlie Rose and director Julian Schnabel. Contrary to this image, Penn seemed to be in very good spirits over the course of the evening, even taking drink orders and collecting them from the bar for friends.

This photo captures the meeting of two generations of beautiful and talented actresses: Natalie Portman, on the right, came over to introduce herself and pay tribute to Lauren Bacall, seated in the middle.

You may have to look closely, but this photo actually captures a reunion between the key players behind last year’s Best Picture winner No Country for Old Men: the bald head in the foreground belongs to co-director Ethan Coen, two folks in front of him is his brother and co-director Joel Coen, and in front of him is the film’s star Josh Brolin (wearing the red scarf). The trio were heading outside for a smoke when this picture was snapped.

ATWI… INTERVIEW SERIES KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS

ATWI… INTERVIEW SERIES KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS

Oscar nominee Kristin Scott Thomas portrays a fractured soul in I’ve Loved You So Long

Yesterday, I spoke by phone with Kristin Scott Thomas, a best actress contender for her performance in Philippe Claudel’s French film I’ve Loved You So Long (10/24, Sony Pictures Classics, trailer). Thomas is also well known for her previous performances in Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), The Horse Whisperer (1998), Gosford Park (2001), and above all The English Patient (1996), for which she received a best actress nod twelve years ago.

In I’ve Loved You So Long, which has become a French box-office sensation and is only now beginning to open across America, Thomas portrays Juliette Fontaine, a woman who attempts to reintegrate into society and her own family after spending the last 15 years behind bars for a crime few even know about and fewer still can understand. It is a quiet, intense character study that subtly tackles issues like sisterhood (her kid sis is played by Elsa Zylberstein, with whom I spoke on Thursday), parenthood, and selflessness of the most remarkable sort. The earlier performance that it most brings to mind—in terms of both the total commitment of the actress to the part and the part itself—is Meryl Streep’s in Sophie’s Choice (1982), which is no small compliment!

Thomas was born in England but moved to France at a young age and, as is evident in this film, is completely fluent in the language and mannerisms of the French. She is seeking to join a list of just sixteen women who have been nominated for best actress for a performance delivered in a foreign language, and to become only the third—along with Sophia Loren for Two Women (1960) and Marion Cotillard for La Vie En Rose (2007)to win. (Incidentally, the same excellent young publicist who guided Cotillard to her unlikely win last year is now helming Thomas’ awards push, so anything’s possible.)

ATWI… INTERVIEW SERIES ELSA ZYLBERSTEIN

ATWI… INTERVIEW SERIES ELSA ZYLBERSTEIN

Elsa Zylberstein, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Philippe Claudel on set of I’ve Loved You So Long

This afternoon, I spoke by phone with the Parisian actress Elsa Zylberstein, age 36, who stars opposite Kristin Scott Thomas in Philippe Claudel’s excellent French film “I’ve Loved You So Long” (10/24, Sony Pictures Classics, trailer). Thomas and Zylberstein both give outstanding performances and basically have equal screen time, but Thomas, a Best Actress nominee for The English Patient (1996), is a much bigger name in the United States, which is presumably why SPC has decided to back her for lead and Zylberstein for supporting actress.

Zylberstein was in Los Angeles this week making the rounds on the awards circuit (her English is far from flawless, but quite good) and being feted by the French Embassy, which hosted a luncheon in her honor on Monday (probably in no small part because she has served as France’s Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations since 2001).

As you can hear by playing the podcast below, we chatted about her evolution from a child obsessed with Singin’ in the Rain (1952), to a terrific dancer, to one of the leading chameleonic actresses of French cinema working on one of the most critically-acclaimed French films in years. Have a listen…
