FLASH: JUNO KEEPS ROLLING, WINNING AT STOCKHOLM
25 Nov

Even though people have called me crazy for going with Jason Reitman’s Juno (12/5, Fox Searchlight) as my early pick to win Best Picture—I’m the only pundit to do so, according to the Buzzmeter, Gurus ‘o Gold, and other available sources—I find new reasons every day to believe this out-on-a-limb prediction may be validated come Oscar time. Today? I have just received word that Juno has snagged the Star Audience Award at the Stockholm Film Festival. (Best Film, for the record, went to 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days.) This honor for Juno will join a mantle that already includes accolades from the Rome Film Festival, Austin Film Festival, and Toronto Film Festival (okay, it was first runner-up, but there was no question that Juno rocked the festival more than the winner, Eastern Promises). While neither the Stockholm win nor any of the other precursors awarded thus far guarantee anything, as I try to remind my friends who believe No Country for Old Men has the Oscar in the bag, I do believe we would be foolish not to pay them some attention. High profile wins like Juno‘s unquestionably increase the chances that voters from other fests and groups will (a) check the film out, (b) not feel inhibitions about honoring a semi-comedy, and (c) feel more comfortable endorsing it on their own ballots, because others have done so already. And remember: once a train starts picking up enough steam, it can be very hard to stop…
