SOAP ANNOUNCES!

The Society of Online Awards Prognosticators, established in 2006 and comprised of some of the top Oscar analysts around, has announced its nominees for the first annual SOAP Awards. (There are five nominees in each category, except in cases where there was a tie for the fifth highest vote getter.) The winners will be announced on Wednesday, February 21st.

SOAP President Scott Feinberg (andthewinneris.blog.com) and Vice President Jeffrey Wells (hollywood-elsewhere.com) validated the results; other members include Johnny Alba (theoscarigloo.com), Mark Bakalor (oscarcentral.com), Russ Colombo (home.comcast.net/~atogt), Edward Douglas (comingsoon.net), Carlos Reyes (oscardiary.multiply.com), Nathaniel Rogers (thefilmexperience.net), Andy Scott (everythingoscar.com), Giovanni Tagliaferri (theoscarjam.blogspot.com), and Anne Thompson (reporter.blogs.com/risky).

(The group extends special thanks to Anthony Monelli for developing a program to expedite the calculation of results.)

1 - No Peter O'Toole for Best Living Person w/o an Oscar? (Comment this)

2 - Awesome! Glad to see Children of Men getting the credit it deserves, especially from people who know what they're talking about. It'll be interesting to see how this comes out. (Comment this)

4 - O' Toole has the honorary lifetime Oscar. I'd assume that's why they didn't nominate him. (Comment this)

5 - big surprise! I seriously didn't expect Pan's Labyrinth to make it... yay! and of course loved that my fellow voters loved Children of Men (Comment this)

6 - The special commendations are an interesting proposition for awards, but wasn't SOAP reserved for Snakes on a Plane? (Comment this)

8 - These should be the Oscar´s picks. I can´t imagine an award without United 93, Children of Men and Pan´s Labyrinth. These are the best movies of 2006. Congratulations SOAP. (Comment this)

10 - Mostly good nominations though I would have liked to have seen Daniel Craig and Clive Owen in the Best Actor category and some more love for The Painted Veil. Also including Letters and Apocalypto in the Foreign Film category really isn't fair. (Comment this)

11 - I loved all the variations you have from the standard predictions. Children of Men, The Fountain, Marie Antoinette, The Painted Veil, Pan's Labyrinth, Letters from Iwo Jima -it's nice to see that these movies are so appreciated. Refreshing to see a different take.

It's kind of sad there's little acting recognition for these movies though - for Clive Owen, Hugh Jackman, Ken Watanabe, Naomi Watts, Edward Norton ...it sometimes seem like the acting categories just got set in stone. (Nice to see Gosling and Eckhart join the great O'Toole in your choices, though). (Comment this)

12 - Great picks overall - I would be very happy if the Oscars turn out something like this. My most significant question though, is in the special commendations category, and the award for best scene or sequence. When I saw this award, even before seeing the nominees, the first thing that popped into my mind was the scene in Children of Men in Buxhill, culminating when they walk out with the baby. Not only was that scene visually impressive, but it was simply spine chilling - especially the way it ended. Glad to see the movie got recognition though. (Comment this)
